Come on down to the Dept. of Make/Believe and get all your holiday shopping done in one place. Wouldn’t that be a dream? Well, lucky for you, the Dept. is a place where we believe dreams can become real!
The Poetry Doctor will be in to prescribe poems, and the Worry Management System will be open to help ease holiday (and general) anxiety and blues.
Shop sale items, books written by and for youth, Dreamland Pajamas, new poetry hats, journals, cards, pens, pins, candles, water bottles, and gift cards. You can even give the gift of a Poetry Prescription to someone in your life who’s having feelings (which, let’s face it, is everyone you know!).
We’ll also be serving warm and cold magical elixirs for kids and adults, along with cookies.

You won’t want to miss this year’s Bay Area Book Festival! Swing by our booth on Center St. for bookmaking and art activities, youth author readings, and to experience MEGALAND, a theme Park created by Hoover Elementary, and brought to life with Augmented Reality by Black Terminus. Our youth authors, Isa Vance, Jordyn Newsom, Yousef Abuhambiya, and Zoel Curtis will be reading from their published books from 11:30-12, and signing copies afterward! We are releasing two new titles written by 13 middle-school Oaklanders: Empowered Origins, a Fantasy Anthology by queer youth of color in Oakland, and Fire at Your Fingertips, a poetry anthology. Writers took part in multi-year writing workshops led by author and Chapter 510 Teaching Artist Duane Horton, and have written deep, important, and beautiful stories and poems.

Youth Vs Apocalypse & Chapter 510 Youth Open Mic
Youth Vs Apocalypse and Chapter 510 will be hosting an open mic for Bay Area youth from the ages of 10-19 to provide the space to acknowledge and appreciate the power of resilience we share in our communities, especially when resisting the oppressive systems we are advocating to dismantle. Bring your poems, songs, speeches, verses, and more! If you have past experience performing or it's your first time on the mic we want to hear your words and voice!

Youth Vs Apocalypse and Chapter 510 will be having a writing workshop for youth to come together and imagine what they want their future to look like and how to get there. The writing workshop is FREE for youth ages 10-19.
