Chapter 510’s inaugural Youth Advisory Board wraps up the year strong
A warm congratulations to this year’s Youth Advisory Board cohort for wrapping up the year! Under the guidance of teaching artists Marabet Morales and Duane Horton, the inaugural Youth Advisory Board cohort had a prolific year of leadership development. From taking the reins on running our First Friday teen open mics and writing workshops, to running the 510 Journal, this cohort was eager to push themselves to try new things, while being innovative problem solvers.
They expanded the vision for the First Friday teen open mic by bringing in musical features from local high schools. They grew their leadership skills through participating in an MC and workshop facilitation class, led by teaching artist Gabriel Cortez. Each Youth Advisory Board member took turns fulfilling different roles for the First Friday Teen Open Mics, supporting each other as they expanded their comfort zone.
The Youth Advisory Board also gave a new life to the 510 Journal through fielding submissions around what makes the Bay Area feel like home. They approached the Journal with creativity and resilience as they brainstormed ways to increase submission counts and engage their peers.
From writing together, attending the Youth Speaks slam competition, to reading and editing journal submissions together, this cohort developed a strong sense of community as they honed their skills as youth leaders. Keep an eye out for what these fabulous youth do next!
